Vertical vs. Lateral File Cabinets
A vertical filing cabinet is about 28″ deep, and is meant for front-to-back filing. The suspension on a vertical filing cabinet generally allows the drawer to be fully extended. A lateral file is generally about 20″ deep, and is usually wider than vertical files. The width of lateral files allow for front-to-back or (most often) side-to-side filing. These are generally the most available in our selection of used filing cabinets.
Legal vs. Letter Size Filing Cabinets
This distinction has to do with the size paper the file is meant for. Letter-size file cabinets are about 15″ wide, while legal-size files are approximately 18″ wide. More and more, legal-size filing cabinets are becoming a specialty and are harder to find in lateral file cabinet orientations.
