Empower Chattanooga announced the launch of the “Save It Forward” initiative on May 4th, 2016, aimed at improving the quality of life in targeted areas of our community.
By providing energy savings kits and educations to residents of neighborhoods that experience disparately high utility bills that may force a decision to forego comfort in order to pay other living expenses, Empower Chattanooga endeavors to foster engagement in these communities at a grassroots level. Working among community leaders with sleeves rolled up, the “Save It Forward” team and volunteers are on the ground educating and providing support wherever they’re able in order to foster a culture of sustainability rather than tentatively fix symptoms of a larger issue.
We seized the opportunity to be first corporate partner to Empower’s “Save It Forward” program.
Part of our mission is to encourage sustainability through responsible business practices – especially reducing the amount of furniture in the waste stream. In 2009, the EPA estimated a whopping 9.8 million tons in yearly furniture waste. So, beginning on Earth Day 2016, our program pledges to donate the value of one energy savings kit to Empower Chattanooga for every $100 in used or refurbished chairs that we’re able to keep out of the landfill. We’re striving to concentrate efforts locally in sustainability and community building through the relationships the OFW team is fortunate enough to have made, furthering our mission of reducing consumption and giving back to the community we owe everything to.
Our 1st Contribution in July 2016…
Energy Savings Educations for 49 residents of targeted areas in the “Save It Forward” initiative. That’s what the conscientious support of the people we have the opportunity to work with has done for our corporate partnership program between Earth Day and June 30th. That’s literally a ton of waste kept out of the landfill and put to good use, and as much as $250 in energy savings per household each month among residents who implement sustainable practices in their home (based on results Empower Chattanooga’s seen so far). And this is only the beginning.
In order to sustain our communities, it’s clear that residents must collaborate to produce energy savings in volume. This starts with engagement, and our friends at Empower Chattanooga are trying to foster it by putting feet to pavement and providing the necessary resources.
